My Company

Activity: industrial glue manufacturing

My Life as an entrepreneur

Entrepreneurship runs in the family. My father and grandfather were in the paper and cardboard trade. I wanted to go a step further and enter the world of industry. The rest is down to the people you meet and knowing how to seize opportunities by asking the right questions. You also need to be blithe and determined. I probably caught the entrepreneurial bug when I set up a Junior Enterprise at the age of 19, when I was studying for a BTS diploma at an IT school.

Starting up a manufacturing business involves much more than just making and delivering a product. Above all, you have to take an interest in the clients who will use the products so that you can offer them not just any glue, but the glue that is most suitable for their requirements, both from a technical standpoint and from an environmental and societal standpoint.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

Successfully negotiating the recent recession with minimum job losses.

My next challenge:

Grow exports to account for more than 50% of revenue.

My Company

Name: Streamcore System

Activity: telecom hardware supplier

My Life as an entrepreneur

The desire to move forward, then federate driving forces and build an ambitious project.

What made you take the first step?

Having the opportunity of being involved at the start of an ambitious industrial project (Cegetel in 1997), which showed me that entrepreneurship is not as difficult as you think.

While I was at Cegetel in 1999, I saw that there was a need that my company could not meet. I decided to make this offering available on the market and set up my own business (e-Brands), which was taken over 14 months later by the group I had just left.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

When I left Cegetel in 1999 through the back door to start up my project and came back through the front door 14 months later after receiving top dollar for my business!

My next challenge:

Make Streamcore a flagship of the French technology industry and a champion of the telecoms industry, which is a difficult sector where success is rare.

My Company

Name: Orchestral Services

Main activity: supply of cleaning and associated services to professional and private clients.

Ancillary activity: Orchestral Services is also developing business lines centred around personal assistance services, business and automotive services.

My Life as an entrepreneur

I am the son of an entrepreneur. I grew up in a business environment and therefore naturally wanted to continue this venture by taking over the family business. I have always been a leader, even since a very young age, so it is therefore logical for me to want to take up this challenge and show that I could do as well as my father, if not better.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

  • Creation of Hom Service in 2000.
  • Takeover of the family business Enett Services in 2002.
  • My international experience with the creation of Enett Services Tunisie in 2004.

My next challenge:

  • Move into the Swiss market by acquiring a business that specialises in cleaning services.
  • "Be involved in the G20"

My Company

Name: Vaziva Conseil

Activity: publishing of leisure content for works councils and companies with less than 50 employees via 60life.com

My Life as an entrepreneur

During my time as an employee of several major groups, I came to understand that the values associated with entrepreneurship – independence, creativity and risk-taking – corresponded more closely to my personality.

I wanted to start up a meaningful project that could associate employee benefits with the use of new technologies. With 60life.com, we designed an extension to the concept of the virtual works council, which already existed for businesses with more than 50 employees. Specifically, we wanted to make leisure and cultural activities available to the employees of very small businesses, as well as to artisans, traders and independent professionals at works council prices, and thus increase the purchasing power of those with no employment-related benefits in sectors that were bearing the brunt of the recession.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

Being selected for the G20 YES and the surprise and joy of my business partner, Patrick Berthé

My next challenge: Speaking in public.

My Company

Name: Trace TV (SA)

Activity: themed media group (music and sports celebrities)

My Life as an entrepreneur

With me, it was a question of temperament and personality. I was always class captain at school. I like leadership and its attendant attributes. When I was 16, I launched a newspaper at school that sold very well! It was a fascinating initial experience of entrepreneurship.

As a student, I had various internships in corporations, but always found it very difficult to accept being under management that, in my opinion, did not always take decision in the interest of the company. I therefore said to myself that, as soon as I could, I would make sure that I became my own manager!

At the end of my military service, several companies contacted me with job offers. I said to myself that in starting my own business, I could give a positive response to these various requests, while maintaining the freedom to which I am very attached.

The idea for TRACE, as it exists today, came to me following an analysis of the worldwide market for music television, in light of my various experiences in creating a local, low cost channel in Martinique and the frustration I had when I managed Secteur Ä, a hip hop label in Sarcelles (we could not get any air time on music channels such as MTV and MCM, yet our artists were selling hundreds of thousands of albums).

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

Having succeeded in making TRACE a profitable business that is appreciated by millions of young people on all continents, in the space of four years.

My next challenge:

Make a success of the launch of TRACE Sports, the first channel in the world that is exclusively devoted to sports celebrities.

France

My Company

Name: Qosmos

Activity: technologies for real-time information extraction from IP networks

My Life as an entrepreneur

In my second year at engineering school, I had the opportunity to study in Silicon Valley. I was won over by this Mecca for IT and new technologies, and decided to start my career there, first as a development engineer and then as a product manager. I spent four extremely stimulating years in Silicon Valley and caught the entrepreneurship bug as well.

After two extremely interesting jobs with network companies – Bridge /3Com and Wellfleet / Bay Networks – which I joined while they only had around 100 employees (they currently have more than 5,000 employees) I decided to become an entrepreneur myself and in 1999 to found Maiaah, a corporate network operator.

I wanted to be my own boss and to make the most of the experience acquired during these boom years. In addition to this initial experience, which was an ideal basis for entrepreneurship, I think that I had a certain predisposition to becoming an entrepreneur, such as a taste for risk and competition, and the desire to be in control of my own future rather than be dependent on that of a large group, not to mention the determination to press on when everyone says "it will never work".

In the spring of 1999, I started from scratch and found it immensely rewarding to design projects that corresponded to market needs in my field of networks and telecoms. I wrote 5 mini business plans that I presented to a venture capital investor at Atlas Venture. This investor ultimately became my coach and helped me choose the project on which I would focus all my energy in the coming years.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

In 2010, we signed contracts with major IT and telecoms players, such as HP, and others we cannot name, that are leaders in the fields of security, networks or mobile infrastructures.

This confirms that the strategic positioning of the company, a decision we took 3 years beforehand, is correct. Signing these major contracts represents a genuine accomplishment for the company, following the traditional phases of doubt through which any business venture goes.

My next challenge:

Last year, Qosmos generated revenue of €9.3 million. We want to build the leading company in its field, with revenue in excess of €100 million, which we believe we can achieve through internal and acquisition-based growth.

My Company

Name: JCPMY SAS

Activity: design and production of audio-visual disability-related programmes

My Life as an entrepreneur

I come from a family of champagne producers, so from a very young age I was used to hearing about things such as inventory management, accounts receivable, supplier payments and cash flow requirements.

It was not long before I was actively involved in a variety of organisations, such as the Stade de Reims soccer academy (I was team captain) and at my high school as well (as Junior Year Representative). Being an entrepreneur is above all a state of mind; as soon as I finished my university studies I started my first business.

Losing my sight at the age of 15 was probably an incentive to take control of my life and made me aware of my taste for entrepreneurship that much more quickly. I was driven by the desire to make disability a source of innovations that are useful for everyone (the remote control, which was originally invented for quadriplegics, is a prime example of this), so I started up two businesses in the IT sector. After these two technology ventures, I wanted to work on a less 'intensive' project entitled "J’en crois pas mes yeux" ["I can't believe my eyes"].

This series of light-hearted videos was inspired by what I observed during my studies: who has not felt awkward when not knowing how to behave in the company of a disabled person (e.g. after making apparently inappropriate statements: "Oh God, I just told a blind person the answer was staring him in the face")?

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

One of the most memorable moments was waiting with my partners and the first employees of Visual Friendly for the call from the investment fund, which, at the peak of the dot com implosion, would allow us to develop the business. The call came at 9pm and was followed by enthusiastic celebrations. We opened a few bottles that morning…

My next challenge:

For the video series J’en crois pas mes yeux: television broadcasting.

A new business activity: develop a range of services and a brand federated around the Stade de Reims soccer team (combine respect for an illustrious past and essential communication to new fans).

My Company

Name: Pastas Party

Activity: organisation of dinner parties for singles

My Life as an entrepreneur

I had no particular inclination to become an entrepreneur. Let's say that entrepreneurship found me.

I first started holding Pasta Parties for fun, to extend my network and above all to find the man of my dreams. The first Pasta Parties were informal dinners held at my home every Sunday evening with the aim of meeting new people. Through word of mouth, I received more and more requests from people I didn't know, then others asked my why there were no Pasta Parties in their part of France.

This is where it all started. I said to myself that if there is a demand, then there is a market for people who are disappointed with dating sites and virtual meeting sites, who want something tangible, with 'real' contacts. Against all expectations, I resigned from my permanent job and started my venture with one word in mind: development.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

I was very proud the day I hired my first employee. All of a sudden, everything became real. If someone is working for a living wage, you have to be good enough; you cannot let them down. It is a genuine success to be able to say that through this somewhat eclectic concept, people can earn a living. Even today, this is one of my most memorable moments as an entrepreneur.

My next challenge: Conquer the international market.

My Life as an entrepreneur

My desire to start up a company (shared by my business partner Frederic) first appeared during our studies at the ISTEC business school. We wanted to put the theories we were learning into practice. We both had recent experience of the non-profit sector, so when we met on a study abroad programme at a Chinese university we already had several things in common.

Seeing the motivation of the Chinese students confirmed our desire to launch a venture! In the end, we settled on a fashion product, as we each found something that really interested us in this line of business.

My Life as an entrepreneur

I became an entrepreneur due to my taste for creativity, imagination and freedom. A professional opportunity combined with a propitious personal situation led me to take the first step.

Although I did not have a pre-defined concept, I have always given my colleagues a great deal of autonomy – the development of the business did the rest.

My Company

Name: Setubio

Activity: research and innovation in the field of microbial biotechnologies

My Life as an entrepreneur

I found that my early career in basic research seemed too theoretical and did not have enough practical aspects. I moved on to become a specialist consultant, then the manager of an engineering consultancy, which did not give me enough autonomy and was not advanced enough for my liking.

During these years, I caught glimpses of scientific tools to develop and technical solutions to be provided for the markets on which I was working. For me it was logical to set up a business to develop new tools to carry out research into applications on the markets I had discovered, which were in need of innovative solutions.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

Every morning: the smile on the faces of my employees when they arrive, a sign of their quality of life at work and of their job satisfaction.

My next challenge:

Multiply the revenue by ten in the next four years, increase exports to 30% of revenue and open two subsidiaries.

France

Activity: publication of open source software packages

My Life as an entrepreneur

When I was still a child, I asked my parents for money in order to start my first business. Before setting up Talend with my business partner Fabrice Bonan, I had already had an experience as an entrepreneur. Starting and growing a business is in my nature!

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

When, after 3 years of development, we rolled out our first product in October 2006, and we saw the uptake statistics go through the roof, exceeding even our wildest expectations!

My next challenge:

Make Talend a group to rival the world leaders in software publication. We are moving in the right direction, but we have a long ways to go.

My Company

Name: O2

Activity: personal services

My Life as an entrepreneur

Even as a young teenager I wanted to become an entrepreneur. I worked on several business start-ups before focusing on the O2 project, which for me had the most potential and made the most sense.

The idea came to me while observing those around me: personal services concern everyone, from the youngest child who needs minding and early learning activities, through to the elderly person who needs assistance due to decreased autonomy, not forgetting busy professionals who need to outsource household chores.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

The best is yet to come!

Some milestones: hiring the first employee, the hundredth employee and the thousandth employee, not to mention becoming the leading company for household cleaning services in France since 2008

My next challenge:

Develop an offering for seniors (and become the leader in France in this sector within 4 to 5 years at the most) and grow the business internationally.

France
Ludovic Huitorel
My motto
Don't wait for your opportunity, create it.

My Company

Name: Feralco

Activity: industry / chemicals / water treatment products

My Life as an entrepreneur

Being an entrepreneur first means being creative. However, I was never very good at art or music, but from an early stage I saw the world of work and business as a place for creativity. Incidentally, my first business venture at the age of 21 was a mini-television channel for students, which only lasted for a few months.

Subsequently, it was my career as a manager that brought me (back) to entrepreneurship, as my preferred sector, industry, is intrinsically capital intensive and therefore a difficult environment in which to launch businesses from scratch.

The concept of the business was developed on the basis of a simple idea: take a new look at a sector, specifically the mineral chemistry industry, and products for treating drinking water in particular. This industry is fragmented and barely profitable, if at all. As a result of acquisitions, in just a few years Feralco has built a coherent group of 15 production sites in Europe, which are capable of offering a comprehensive response to clients from various sectors (agglomerations, major water treatment plants, etc.), and for which the products contribute to supplying drinking water to more than 100 million persons.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

Giving daily tasks to teams from all European countries and making the most of these multicultural riches.

My success: launching a new manufacturing plant in France in 2009, despite the recession and the trend towards the de-industrialisation in France.

My next challenge:

Today, Feralco covers 15 European countries from a base of 8 different country establishments. Tomorrow, we want to cover all of Europe, in its broadest sense, certainly via new acquisitions.

France
Bruno Delmas
My motto
Become what you are!

My Company

Name: Constellation

Activity: e-travel platforms

My Life as an entrepreneur

For me, entrepreneurship is synonymous with creativity and freedom. Being driven by one's passions and one's imagination, then materialising them using one's intuition, is a form of freedom that comes at a relatively high price, but that brings unparalleled rewards. This is why I became an entrepreneur.

The idea for my business came to me during the birth of the Internet in the nineties. I immediately thought that it would be important to innovate in the travel industry, which, in my opinion, would go on to become one of the major sectors of e-trade. As France is the leading tourist definition in the world, I also thought that the person who managed to launch a successful business in France could quickly go on to expand successfully throughout the world!

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur: the next one!

My next challenge:

Expanding the business internationally and achieving a healthier work-life balance despite all the demands of being an entrepreneur.

France
Jeremy Garamond
My motto
Be daring and don't be afraid of losing!

My Company

Name: AssurOne Group

Activity: online insurance brokerage

My Life as an entrepreneur

I wanted to "start my own business" (like so many other people), as I had already discovered, for better and for worse, what it was like to start up several companies (some were successful, others were not).

However, I was never the source of these projects. The idea for AssurOne Group came to me while watching investment commercials for the Société Générale, which was vaunting the merits of its branches being open until 10pm. This led me to ask "why?" and to observe consumer behaviour, which resulted in the creation of this insurance system. That was the idea anyway… The idea of offering an insurance subscription and management service that is 100% online (and therefore open 24/7) came to me gradually.

I do not think that there was one thing in particular that made me take the first step, although at the same time there was nothing to stop me. I therefore took courage in both hands, with no reservations and no fear of failure.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

The success of an intricate, complex financial transaction in December 2008 (that had been started in 2007), therefore in the middle of the impending global recession. If the transaction had not been completed by 31 December at midnight, AOG would have potentially been faced with insolvency. The deal was signed on 31 December at 11am.

Ultimately, I think it is the smile on the faces of the employees that gives me satisfaction from day to day.

My next challenge:

Hire a talented Managing Director and build an excellent working relationship with this person. This means recognising my weaknesses and letting someone else look after some aspects of the 'baby' to ensure the long-term stability of the business, which is entering a new phase of its existence.

France

Apart from his companies, Brice Alzon is very involved in the entrepreneurship clubs of his former schools Essec and Telecom ParisTech. My Company

Name: Sarenza

Activity: online sale of shoes

My Life as an entrepreneur

I founded the business because, in my opinion, there is nothing more rewarding than having the freedom to implement a project from A to Z as a team, which is founded on one's values.

What made you take the first step?

Luck. A former employee of AOL contacted me. He was the joint founder of Sarenza, however the company was going through a major crisis and needed new management in order to get back on its feet. This was a challenge, which I chose to take up, namely turning the company around then growing it.

I did not invent the idea, but I did take over the company. Sarenza was launched using the hyper-choice, hyper-service model for online shoe sales invented by Zappos, a US site that has since been taken over by Amazon.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

There are no personal memorable moments, as each success is shared with the teams. However, seeing smiling faces when the teams arrive at the office in the morning is the best form of success and reward. The extremely low staff turnover in Sarenza teams is also a considerable source of satisfaction for me.

My next challenge:

Ensuring my children find happiness in life!

France

My Company

Name: Canalce

Activity: leading service provider for works councils and employees

My Life as an entrepreneur

In 2000, there was a lot of hype surrounding the Internet and this made me want to set up my company. This was confirmed when I watched "Capital" on the French channel M6. The report was about two young entrepreneurs who were raising funds: they had a structured business plan but their idea was nothing revolutionary.

At one point, the programme showed a financier who said: "This project interests me, I would invest 5 million francs". I got out of my seat and I said: "That's it! I am also going to start up a business". I did not yet have the idea, but I felt that it was the right time. I had progressed and learned during the 10 years I spent at Coca-Cola, and I had undeniable abilities. On the other hand, I had no idea what this involved and I did not know any entrepreneurs. The assignments that were given to me at Coca-Cola meant that I had contact with works councils, as they generally take the decision to install drinks machines.

The market appeared to be open and there was still plenty of potential for Internet-driven change. I wrote my business plan and started to look for investors. After 70 meetings, five financiers decided to back my venture and Canalce was born.

My most memorable moments as an entrepreneur:

Signing the first documents, such as the articles of association and the shareholders' agreement, opening the company bank account, writing cheques, etc. (with my name, my signature and my references).

My first recruitments and issuing the first pay slips (the employees wanted to be part of the venture!)

My first client and business partner (someone other than me who believed in the business!)

My first coverage in the press, on the radio and on television.

Closing off my first balance sheet and seeing that I had created value.

My next challenge:

Continue to grow all aspects of the business (e.g. revenue, profitability, headcount and market share). Move towards the world of major corporations while maintain an SME/family atmosphere, ensuring employee loyalty and not selling my soul!

My Life as an entrepreneur

I wanted to become an entrepreneur, as I had always seen this as a challenge, and in order to be able to develop my skills within my own structure, alongside employees of my own choosing.

My combined technical, commercial and human resource experience encouraged me to become an entrepreneur when I felt really ready. The experience acquired throughout my career, which has always been focused on energy, gave me the idea to start up a business in the field of energy savings.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

Without a doubt, the presentation of the "TALENTS DES CITES 2008" trophies at the French Senate, attended by Mr Gérard Larcher, Ms Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and the Secretary of State for Urban Policy, Ms Fadela Amara.

My next challenge:

Setting up and developing a new business in the field of energy efficient homes.

My Life as an entrepreneur

I wanted to sale across the Atlantic, climb Kilimanjaro and start up a business before the age of 30. I was lucky enough to accomplish all three.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

Winning the HEC business school Mercures des Entrepreneurs prize in 2000, and the going through all the boom years with my team at my side.

My next challenge: continue to find new growth drivers, while remaining a flexible, expanding organisation.

My Company

Name: L’Usine à Design

Activity: online sale of designer furniture and decorative objects at ex-works prices. Items can be customised for individuals and groups

My Life as an entrepreneur

I was lucky enough to accompany several entrepreneurs in their daily lives in Brazil and the UK. Their daily lives and their sense of fulfilment were simply staggering. I caught the bug from them. When I returned to France, I took the HEC Entrepreneur master's degree, which confirmed that I was made for action and creation.

The idea? A problem to be solved on the furniture market: before IKEA, you could find original, individual pieces of furniture, but they were expensive, often prohibitively so. With the IKEA revolution, design became affordable, but at the price of increasing uniformity. Why not reconcile design, accessibility and personalisation / personality? The solution for me is democratic design, where you allow clients to personalise their furniture and select the designers whose work will be manufactured, all at ex-works prices.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

One of the most memorable moments was of course launching the business, when the site at last went live and I witnessed the first order with the founding team, in the garage we were using as premises.

The first time I appeared on television ("Capital" on the M6 channel, after only being in business for 3 months) was also highly memorable and true recognition of our efforts. In any case it was an excellent springboard for continued business development. I am also very proud that I was able to go on vacation after one year, and that the entire team did a fantastic job in my absence!

My next challenge:

I naturally want to expand L’Usine à Design to a European level by continuing to improve the experience of purchasing furniture and our products, by satisfying more and more clients, by developing our offering to corporate clients and working closely with designers.

My Company

Name: Dallavalle

Activity: building services business specialised in the renovation of social housing and hotels. Four business lines: renovation, housing refurbishment, maintenance and adaptation for persons with reduced mobility.

My Life as an entrepreneur

After 15 years as an operations manager in various services companies, I wanted to take over and grow a "services" business using my managerial and marketing know-how.

It was when I heard the founder of Dallavalle tell me about the reasons for his success that I became convinced that the key to a successful services business could also validly apply to the housing renovation and even become a major path to differentiation and development.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

The 2010 Christmas party on the Seine, attended by 130 persons (up from 80 the previous year). Despite an increasing headcount, everyone feels part of the Dallavalle team, we all share the same desire to develop the services we provide to our clients and we are all happy and proud to be part of the Dallavalle organisation.

My next challenge:

Successfully grow the business through acquisitions so that we become the benchmark for building services.

My Company

Name: Gironde Secretariat

Activity: freelance secretarial services

My Life as an entrepreneur

I became an entrepreneur at the end of a contract. The idea of being freelance had attracted me for several years and the end of this contract, along with the status of auto-entrepreneur were the deciding factors. Being my own boss, being able to decide on my own schedule and getting up every morning with a specific goal is highly motivating and satisfying.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

Being able to show that secretarial work is a genuine line of business and that it is possible to become a business manager at 25, even without extensive prior experience.

The most memorable moment is still the signature of my first contract, at which point you know that everything is possible and that you can be optimistic about the future!

And, of course, being selected as a delegate for YES 2011!

My next challenge:

Changing status, perhaps by setting up a company with a colleague.

My Company

Name: LUDIQ' LAND

Activity: Indoor playground for children

My Life as an Entrepreneur

We had the idea for LudiQ' Land when we were on the beach with our children. We were still employees at the time and wanted a change of direction; my partner was a physical therapist and I was a lawyer. At the time she was working with sick children and my job involved resolving contractual disputes with dissatisfied clients.

We already had the energy and the desire to start up a business. As young mothers, we knew that there were not many activities for children and their parents in the surrounding area. We had also observed that there were hardly any facilities for making young children aware of environmental protection issues and the need to respect our heritage. This gave us inspiration and the desire to launch our business venture.

Our most memorable moment as an entrepreneur, our success:

Seeing children play happily at LudiQ'Land with a sparkle in their eyes! An internal client satisfaction survey showed that 99% of those surveyed recommend LudiQ'Land and would like to return. This also represents a success for us.

Our next challenge: Open other LudiQ'Land sites!

My Company

Name: G2J VideoConference

Activity: audio and videoconference services

My Life as an entrepreneur

Even at a very young age, it was clear to me that I was meant to be an entrepreneur. Since my childhood in Martinique and after numerous trips throughout the world, I developed a taste for entrepreneurship. There was no specific event or contact that made me see the light and encouraged me to take the first step.

It was always something I had in me and that drove me to take the first step. I set up my company to prove to myself that I could live without suffering as an employee all day. I was saved from moroseness by work and responsibilities! I had my ability to absorb a heavy workload and nothing to lose, so I forged ahead!

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

China was an extremely enriching experience for my family and I. Observing different cultures is fascinating. For example, in China I had a lot of fun comparing our creole expressions with Chinese proverbs, and my colleagues and I realised that some of them are similar: "Dé mal krab pa ka rété adan mèm’ twou a" becomes "Two tigers cannot live on the same mountain". I even played them Kassav’ and Francky Vincent, and they vastly preferred Kassav’, without even understanding the lyrics!

My next challenge:

Position one of our business lines as the world number one. I believe G2J has the capacity to achieve this.

My Company

Name: Leetchi.com

Activity: Leetchi.com is an online service for organising cash pools among friends and colleagues – exactly what you need for a joint gift, a weekend among friends or a leaving gift!

My Life as an entrepreneur

I have always been fascinated by projects, whether class representation (Epita 2002-2003) during my studies, raising awareness among young people to vote in my hometown of Toulouse or organising cultural events. It was meeting Gilles Babinet, a serial entrepreneur for whom I worked for one year (2006-2007) that set me on the path to launching my own business venture.

In September 2007 I started at HEC Paris and had to organise the induction weekend. This involved circulating a piece of paper on which each person's contribution was listed. The programme included a round trip to the market at Rungis, renting a house in Normandy and dividing tasks among 30 people. All that remained was to collect the money to do the shopping!

I had not reckoned on a major difficult: we were missing at least half the amount needed for the trip! The team doing the shopping advanced the cash for the rest of the class. Some of them never got back the money they had paid out! I asked myself, 'what if there was an online cash pooling site?' That would make a lot of situations easier. And friendships would no longer be spoiled by bad debts!

This was how Leetchi.com started!

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

Seeing a team of 6 persons work around the clock for an idea in which they believe. It is always a pleasure to receive emails from clients who express their satisfaction.

My next challenge:

Take the company international!

Activity: Sale of OEM automotive spare parts on the Internet

My Life as an entrepreneur

I would be incapable of doing anything else. At the age of 19, I spent 6 months in Berkeley, California, and came back convinced that entrepreneurs are the new explorers of our era.

In 1999, after 8 years' experience managing an SME, and with an MBA from Sciences Po, I launched my business venture. In December 1999, someone broke my rear-view mirror in the street. I have always been fascinated by mechanics and new technologies since childhood. I quickly noticed that there was no offering for OEM automotive spare parts on the Internet in France, Europe, or even in the USA. Oscaro was born!

My Company

Name: Envie de Fraises

Activity: E-Trade

My Life as an entrepreneur

I have been interested in China since childhood. I spent half of my life there between the age of 18 and 28, firstly as a student then as a business founder and coordinator in China for the major French fashion houses.

At the age of 27 I started up my first company, Chinattitude, which is specialised in French-Chinese relations.

When I became pregnant in 2004, I discovered the lack of choice of maternity wear, hence my idea for a site that would meet all the needs of expectant mothers, both in terms of products and content. Envie de Fraises is more than a site. It is the first French "web brand", i.e. a prêt-à-porter brand launched on the web. We design 80% of the items sold on the site.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

When I pass expectant mothers in street who are wearing Envie de Fraises clothes and when they tell me how much they are satisfied with our products! More than 200,000 future mothers have already bought our products. The satisfaction of our clients is more than a duty; it is an obsession.

Delight expectant mothers throughout Europe!

My Company

Name: NetAffiliation (C2B Group)

Activity: affiliation platform, e-marketing consulting

My Life as an entrepreneur

I have always had a strong desire to be an entrepreneur! The hard part is making the first step. For me everything started the day I imagined myself as a banker at the age of sixty, who had never had the courage to start up his own business.

For NetAffiliation, everything started with designing a website with tips and cash back offers that I set up with a partner in 2003. We used affiliation to promote the site, and we noticed that this was a potential growth market where we could contribute innovations.

Our taste for entrepreneurship, our fierce determination to succeed and the IT talents of my business partner did the rest!

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

Most memorable moment: the last 8 years - My success: the next 8 years, I hope, and I am striving to achieve this. The life of an entrepreneur is filled with high points, and occasionally low points. I always focus on the positive aspects: excellent relations with my colleagues and the friendships that are forged with business partners, for example.

I also have two reasons to be proud:

  • I was one of the few who believed in "small companies" when they were starting out, such as Spartoo, Betclic and Groupon
  • I have remained loyal to our first clients and partners, such as Vistaprint, MaisMoinsCher, and Florajet.

My next challenge: Increase our revenue by 1,500% in the next 7 years!

Activity: development, marketing and distribution of soft drinks.

My Life as an entrepreneur

Everything probably started unconsciously. I always wanted to be an entrepreneur, in particular in the industrial sector, as can be seen in my childhood drawings of factory plans! The idea for Borderline nevertheless came to me somewhat by chance during an evening spent with the people who are now my three business partners. The challenge of such an adventure at the age of 24 was too tempting!

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

Entrepreneurship is a series of difficulties and successes, however if I had to choose one moment in particular, it would be at 7am in the factory, when our first bottles rolled off the production line.

My next challenge:

Make a success of the launch of our new products and finish raising capital.

Activity: social microfinance platform

My Life as an entrepreneur

After 12 years spent working for banks in the wealth management sector, in 2004 I received an email from Amsterdam appointing me as responsible for sustainable development at the OBC bank, even though I didn't even know what "sustainable development" meant. In January 2005, a collection for the victims of the Tsunami put me in touch with ACTED and introduced me to microcredit. In March 2005, during a meeting with the ABN sustainable development manager, I was introduced to his intern Aurélie Duthoit, without whom nothing would have been possible.

In May 2006 I discovered Kiva through an article in "Courrier International". Kiva is the leading US site that allows the general public to grant social loans in order to support small-scale entrepreneurs who wish to develop an activity that generates income. The rest is history!

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

Having succeeded in changing banking laws so that Babyloan can be considered as a legal activity and fulfil its social function.

My next challenge:

Extend Babyloan beyond France so that ethical loans are not limited a North-South or North-North relation, but also South-South and why not even South-North?

My Company

Name: Latour Capital / Canal Blog.com

Activity: investment fund / blog platform

My Life as an entrepreneur

I am a former civil servant. I became an entrepreneur in order to make a different type of contribution to the development of my country, while retaining control over my future.

The emergence of the Internet was a triggering event. In the beginning, it was unchartered territory with unlimited opportunities. I immediately grasped how the web could be a dominant media form, in which computers are connected via hypertext links in the same way as neurones are linked by synapses; it was clearly a more intelligent system that would one day overtake other types of media.

Caradisiac.com, my first business (currently with revenue of €45 million and EBIT of €14 million) became the leading French automotive medium and is one of the top automotive forums in the world.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

Caradisiac.com's first contract, in 2000, which came to… €1,500. My success: the team spirit at Caradisiac was such that no one left during the six years I was with the company. Another source of satisfaction: starting a business that now has revenue of €45 million with only €15,000 of seed capital.

My next challenge:

Make Latour Capital a reference for investment in growth companies, with an entrepreneurial approach. Monetize the massive audience of Canalblog.com (1 million blogs, 1 million daily hits) in order to make it a prosperous, highly profitable business.

My Company

Name: Collectibus

Activity: Passenger transport

My Life as an entrepreneur

The idea for Collectibus started after the 2003 heat wave, when France discovered the consequences of certain sectors of the population, such as the elderly and disabled persons, being isolated.

In order to overcome this isolation, Collectibus first aimed to offer an on-demand passenger transport service for persons facing physical or geographical difficulties. In order to offer  competitive prices, Collectibus always tries to avoid empty seats in its vehicles (9-seater minibuses).

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

We have won several competitions and we have been warmly congratulated by several organisations. These are unforgettable moments. However, I will never again feel the same emotion as when I transported our first passenger (an elderly lady).

My next challenge:

Employ more than 100 staff and generate revenue of more than €2,000,000 in 2012

My Company

Name: Crèche Attitude

Activity: design and management of childcare facilities for young children

My Life as an entrepreneur

In my entire career, I have only been an employee for 6 months (after 2 years of internships in major groups during my studies). One of my clients asked me to join him in an Internet start-up in 2000. This company closed in 2004. In 2002 I had started a new venture specialised in business consulting (restructuring ailing SMEs). While doing this I took an interest in the childcare sector, which, despite massive demand in France, has a hard time breaking even. My initial idea was to give struggling associations the possibility of outsourcing their management. Soon after, the government made it possible for private sector businesses to operate crèches by making them eligible for family benefit subsidies and by offering the Family Tax Credit. Our business grew very quickly with the support of these aids.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

My success is all about having found a very healthy work-life balance; I have never put myself in a position where I was forced to choose between the two. It is very hard to identify the most memorable moment, as there have been so many!

My next challenge:

Over the next 2 to 3 years I would like to set up my own small fund to provide financial, logistics and intellectual support for young entrepreneurs.

Name: Secure-IC SAS

Activity: nanotechnologies

My Life as an entrepreneur

Becoming an entrepreneur is a longstanding ambition of mine, however I had to wait for the right time.

My engineering background and my extensive experience of doing business internationally mean that I take great pleasure in converting an innovative technology into a business opportunity.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

My Life as an entrepreneur

In order to defend my 'cause', I had no choice other than to launch my own business and to be the driving force behind it. In my opinion, disability is all too often perceived as being associated with the non-profit sector. Instead, I wanted a corporate structure. I had to draw on my experience in order to become an entrepreneur. The idea came to me as a result of my experience as a child of deaf parents and the role I played for them. I had to adapt, facilitate their autonomy, remain positive and create equality. There were virtually no solutions available for the aurally challenged, whose specific needs were only rarely known.

The first step was hard, as I had to accept that my personal life would form the basis for my professional life. I had to create a service, then overcome disability and the fear of those who are different in order to turn this difference into something positive, a need or even a business opportunity for others.

My goal is to turn a 'different' population into clients. This has driven me forward and motivated me. For me, becoming an entrepreneur was the only way to achieve significant, widespread progress.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

The first time I saw our accessibility logo next to the toll free number in supermarkets and the reaction of my deaf parents when they too saw it! Services for the disabled and non-disabled side by side in daily life! Wonderful!

My next challenge:

Taking the company international and setting up an adapted training centre.

Activity: sales training centre

My Life as an entrepreneur

I became an entrepreneur because I wanted to pass on my passion for sales to others.

Starting my own business appeared to me to be a natural choice in order to share this enthusiasm with others while retaining the freedom that is so important to me. Many people dream of being completely independent. It is not necessarily easy to achieve this, however I refuse to give up. Ultimately, my ambition is freedom-driven!

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

In addition to growing Booster Academy, each day we assist sales representatives and job seekers, as well as many businesswomen and businessmen in their canvassing activities. I am proud that my students who apply the sales techniques learned at Booster Academy generate tangible results. This gives me real motivation to see them develop and make a success of their careers! To a certain extent, we help contribute to the economic development of France.

My Company

Name: LIMONETIK

Activity: payment platform

My Life as an entrepreneur

Very early in my career, I saw that becoming an entrepreneur was a clear choice. As soon as I graduated I alternated between start-ups and consulting engagements with major industrial groups; this confirmed that the entrepreneurship bug had bitten me.

The idea for Limonetik came from Nicolas Benady, my business partner and the company President. We met at Grenoble University. Nicolas got married in 2006 and set up a gift list. To his great disappointment, this list was nothing other than a very specific means of payment that could not be used for to make purchases on any of the major European e-trade sites. In focussing on the wedding gift list, we realised that there was an astronomic number of "alternative" payment means, such as gift cards, loyalty points, pre-paid cards and electronic wallets, none of which were valid on the major European sites. The potential is massive and global. Thus began the Limonetik venture. My conclusion: get married, it gives you ideas !

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

There have been a lot of them, and there will be many more to come. In the last 2 weeks, the most memorable moment was raising €5.1 million of capital.

My next challenge:

Impose the Limonetik payment platform as a reference for alternative payments throughout Europe. Then we will take on the rest of the world.

My Company

Name: Ferret Dream Company

Activity: Sale and manufacture of accessories for animals, particularly ferrets

My Life as an entrepreneur

Everything started when I was 15. It was not at all my idea to set up a business at this age, even though I was planning to do so after finishing my studies. However, in doing online research to find good-value accessories for my ferret, I knew I wanted to launch a business venture.

I saw that there was only one supplier for online retailers who sold cloth items for ferrets (and that there was only one supplier for the animal stores in my region). I then wanted to make my own small hammocks for my pet ferret. This is how I learnt how to sew, first by hand, and that I discovered that it was not so difficult to make this type of accessory. In consulting online forums I quickly realised that there was indeed a demand, and that other people had reached the same conclusions as me, or even ordered from the US to get the best prices, even if the items were not so reliable.

Once I knew this, I didn't want anyone to steal my idea! I carried out a market survey in secret, as I wanted to present something credible to my parents; although they are very open I knew that I was making a difficult request. Using this study, I was able to show them that only a small investment was needed and that there was a genuine market that had scarcely been explored (ferrets are the third most popular pet in both France and the US). Once I got past this stage, it took me one year to design the prototypes for the models, to find suppliers and sub-contractors, to make contact with banks, for example.

I should point out that I was managing this business in parallel with my studies, which are still my priority. The venture was primarily an experiment, which, if it had not worked, would not have involved too many financial commitments, and which, if successful, would be an incredibly rich learning experience. The risks were minimal, and as I found studying relatively easy I had the opportunity to start up a business at the age of 16.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

I am living the most memorable moments right now: I have met many different people, attended events such as the Salon des Entrepreneurs, spoken at a conference in front of more than 1,000 persons and been selected to represent the captains of business from my country via the G20 YES and other events. This is extremely fulfilling. For the business itself, I think that always receiving positive feedback on my products provides considerable satisfaction and already represents a form of success.

My next challenge:

Take this company as far as possible my making our accessories "must have" rather than "nice to have". In all probability I will start up another venture. There is a lot of work still to be done!

My Life as an entrepreneur

For me, there was never any question of doing anything other than starting up my own business. I saw my father enjoy considerable success in a major agro-food group, yet I saw that this held him back from launching his own business venture. I did not see myself following a typical career path and wanted to do things my way. I like the freedom of being an entrepreneur.

When I graduated from HEC in 1993, I went to New York for two years of voluntary service overseas. It was there that I discovered an amazing service, Dial-A-Mattress. You can purchase a mattress by telephone and have it delivered within two hours! I found the concept interesting, and when I returned to France at the end of 1994, after a market study on bedding products (which I did not know at all), I decided to start Matelsom.

Setting up an industrial venture is a bold statement. In so doing you are stating that you believe industry to be a source of wealth and employment, and that our country has the ability to and should be involved in designing, developing and also manufacturing goods.

The market for ski slope groomers is a stable market on which there was a German and Italian duopoly. This type of situation kills innovation and means that client expectations fall on deaf ears. I therefore left the subsidiary of one of these two players, where I was the manager, in order to create an alternative and meet the requirements of operators. Aztec was thus founded in the summer of 2009.

Each groomer produced by Aztec improves the French trade balance by around €300k.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

Having obtained backing from Japanese partners in 2 days; we thought it would take at least 2 years. This backing was vital for launching Aztec,

Having obtained unexpected, tangible support from the Caterpillar Group, which provides us with excellent industrial facilities.

My next challenge:

From a technical standpoint, a groomer with zero emissions; From a commercial standpoint, grow exports to reach 60% of revenue, From an entrepreneurial standpoint, ensure that Aztec remains independent from its 2 major competitors.

My Company

Name: Anim’ALIM® - Jouez pour mieux manger! (business started on 1 January 2010)

Activity: nutritional and dietary education

Anim’ALIM® (currently a sole proprietorship) is undergoing deep change and will soon become the brand Anim’ALIM®, which will link up with the Centre Ressources Éducation Nutritionnelle et Alimentation (CRÉNA®). This organisation should benefit from cooperative status by the end of 2011 or the start of 2012.

My Life as an entrepreneur

In March 2009, I did not have a job. I held a Master's degree in life sciences and health, majoring in nutrition, and with only 1 year's experience in general healthcare prevention (preventive nutrition, lifestyle health, oral and dental hygiene, for example). Very few jobs, if any, corresponded to my professional goals. I was fascinated by informing and raising the awareness of the general public and professionals, and basically wanted to pursue this line of work. This gave me the idea to promote FOOD for PLEASURE, to both young and old, so that they will want to cook, eat and protect their future health TOGETHER!

I presented my idea to the Adelfa entreprendre training organisation, on the advice of my local job centre, and was offered an independent contract for 18 months, with monitoring by the ADRET business start-up consulting network. This is how the project started! Eight months later, on 4 December 2009, after a period of intense work, Anim’ALIM® was launched!

After more than one year in business, and faced with an increasing number of demands, I had to consider the future of the venture. As I wanted to develop the idea, I approached a school friend, Sarah Boivin, in order to do this.

Our most memorable moments entrepreneurs:

I have never been as proud as I am of the work that was done on the day the Talents des Cités prizes were present, in the Senate itself! What an occasion this was! I was delighted to have been able to share this moment with my parents and my boyfriend. The announcement of our selection to represent France at the G20 YES was pretty good as well! These two moments highlight involvement with sectors of the public that I care about and that form the basis for my motivation.

You need to make the most of daily successes, which help you overcome daily difficulties: for example, a child who discovers that he or she likes mangosteen or a partner who believes in a project and decides to invest. Being selected for the G20 YES is the icing on the cake and recognition for what we have built.

Our next challenge:

The project for the Centre Ressources Education Nutritionnelle has been launched. For us, the ball is in the court of institutional investors, future partners and financial backers. The CRÉNA® will be launched regardless of what happens, sooner or later, depending on the investments we are able to attract. Implement the project in order to be able to create jobs! In the medium term we plan to hire 9 employees. The next step is to convince partners and financiers to invest!

My Company

Name: fifty-five

Activity: business analytics marketing company that optimises website conversions

My Life as an entrepreneur

I became an entrepreneur because I am a creator: I like the design phases in which you move from the idea to the concept and from the sketch to the prototype and then to the finished product. I see entrepreneurship as a creative approach that is midway between being an artist and an artisan, with an added economic dimension, of course, and an aim of sustainable, large-scale development.

The idea for my business came to me through extensive brainstorming with colleagues and friends on innovative ideas that are connected to the rapid expansion of the Internet in the economy and daily life. My expertise in this sector, and that of my business partners, led us to designing an innovative service offering and technology built around analytics (analysis of web data) applied to the performance of websites.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

The sale of Cooptin to Keljob in 2005.

My next challenge:

Make fifty-five a success story.

Activity: training and consulting

My Life as an entrepreneur

I started my career with a desire to start up my own business. 1,000 business ideas and 13 years later, a skills assessment confirmed my considerable need for independence and creativity. Time out from work while I was on maternity leave gave me the opportunity to fulfil my dream of learning how to design websites.

I needed people on whom to try out my ideas and my entrepreneur friends became my 'guinea pigs'. I then realised that my professional experience allowed me to offer these business managers numerous complementary services, such as brochure design, email campaign consulting, search engine optimisation, business partner recommendations, sales pitch advice and online advertising.

The launch of the status of auto-entrepreneur in France (simplified form of sole proprietorship) was what started everything: the reduced administrative formalities and lack of risks allowed me to launch my venture, become my own boss, make all the decisions and take up the challenge of entrepreneurship!

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur was my first interview on the web radio Widoobiz, which was obtained through the Fédération des auto-entrepreneurs, which helped me and supported me, as it does every day for so many other fledgling entrepreneurs and business managers.

At the end of the first one-day training course I ran, the seven trainees were delighted, their batteries were recharged and their minds were overflowing with ideas to develop their business activity: for me, this represented success and showed that I had reached my goal. Since then, each training session leaves me stimulated and eager to run the next course in order to help other entrepreneurs.

My next challenge:

I would like to "export" my training workshops outside the Paris region by offering sessions to business incubators, business hatcheries and entrepreneurs clubs based in other parts of France.

My Company

Name: NOVAPOST

Activity: software publisher

My Life as an entrepreneur

I was born into a family of entrepreneurs. I was brought up in a culture of venture and optimism, which made me realise at a very young age what I wanted to do in life: start up my own business.

The Novapost idea started with an HEC-Entrepreneurs business start-up assignment proposed by our tutor, Pierre Kosciusko-Morizet.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

My most memorable moment as an: signing a contract with our first major client, after 18 months of calls for tenders in which we were competing against the French Post Office.

Our greatest success: working with 30 persons who are happy to come to work every morning and who go home content each evening.

My next challenge:

Tomorrow !

My Company

Name: Orolia

Activity: GPS-critical equipment and systems

My Life as an entrepreneur

In 2002, the sale of Thales Microsonics (a subsidiary of Thales of which I was the managing director) to Temex (a family-owned, medium-sized business), of which I became the CEO, placed me in the front line in the world of business ventures. I quickly caught the entrepreneurship bug due to the considerable freedom of action, speed of execution, immediate feedback on decisions and the intense challenge this provides.

The restructuring of Temex, which was in sere difficulties due to the 2002 high-tech market crisis, led me to change the business lines through sales and acquisitions, then to spin off Orolia (the equipment and systems division of Temex) with the aim of making it into a world leader for positioning, navigation and timing applications for GPS-critical uses (defence, space, security, aviation and marine uses), which did not have an equivalent and still does not today.

Orolia's specialised field is a result of my experience majoring in armament at the Ecole Polytechnique, as well as an understanding of all the barriers (technology, market, strategy and management) that need to be overcome in order to ensure the long-term development of a high-tech business.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

Each time I manage to convince someone to invest major capital in my business, or a management team to join our group via an acquisition, or my employees on a daily basis, since they believe in and embrace my vision.

The stock market flotation of Orolia in 2007, acquisitions such as Spectracom (2007, USA) or McMurdo (2009, UK), or the mobilisation of the business during times of deep strategic change are times of considerable satisfaction.

My next challenge:

Federate Orolia's organisation and strategy around three market segments: Government, Aviation and Marine (as opposed to a structure based on technical product lines) in order to reach a new growth threshold and boost revenue over €100 million.

My Company

Name: Beauty Revolution

Activity: Beauty parlours

My Life as an entrepreneur

This idea came to me during a trip to the United States, which is a country where communitarianism is prevalent. In the USA, I noticed that beauty parlours were accessible to everyone. In contrast, in France, which is one of the more open countries and where considerable importance is attached to human rights, beauty parlours are completely closeted.

My most memorable moment as an entrepreneur:

The launch of my project "100 women have decided to change their lives". This is a social entrepreneurship project that will prove that we can create 1,000 jobs in 3 years and create 100 businesses without financing, but with amazing personal stories, regardless of where you come from!

My next challenge: Change the world!
